Marvin Nicoleau '16, a biochemistry and molecular biology major at F&M, is a fourth-year medical student at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland. He enrolled at the College in 2012 as a result of a new partnership between F&M and the Posse Foundation to create only the third Science Posse cohort in the United States. We asked him to talk about how his broad liberal arts background has helped prepare him for a career in medicine.

F&M: What is your area of postgraduate study?

Marvin: I recently finished applications and interviews for residency in the diagnostic radiology specialty. Match day is coming soon, and I'm really excited to find out where I end up for residency!

F&M: How has your liberal arts education prepared you for what you are currently doing?

Marvin: I believe my liberal arts education at F&M has helped me become a well-rounded student. The pre-med track at F&M was rigorous, yet rewarding in the sense that it taught me the work ethic I needed for doing all in medical school. Additionally, when I think back to the non-science courses I took at F&M (Africana studies, women and gender studies, or art courses), I remember the intense and thought-provoking dialogue my professor and peers had. These discussions were really helpful in making sure I keep an open mind with the exciting and changing times, and have also been helpful in framing the way I interact with patients of all backgrounds.

F&M: Tell us about a person or experience at F&M that you've drawn on to help you succeed when presented with a challenge.

Marvin: Major influences that I drew on during challenges at F&M were my friends, organizations and mentors. I had a close and supportive group of friends I found at F&M through Posse, I.M.P.A.C.T. and the Black Student Union. As I navigated the pre-med arena, I formed great relationships with my mentors, Dr. (Ken) Hess, Dr. (Dan) Weber '76 and Dr. (Cherise) Hamblin '03 who have been helpful and supportive on my journey. There are so many people at F&M willing to offer advice and mentor students in their respective fields. It is one of the qualities about F&M that I love.

F&M: What brief advice would you give an admitted student who is considering attending F&M?

Marvin: F&M has a beautiful campus with amazing opportunities for any major or field you want to pursue. I suggest pursuing something you are passionate about, as you are sure to find the support you need. Don't forget to have fun in the process, either!
