Alumni Share Advice with Future Diplomats
Meaning "both/and," the ampersand in the middle of our College鈥檚 name is more than just punctuation鈥攊t鈥檚 the defining symbol of our distinctive liberal arts experience. This philosophy comes to life on our tree-lined, 220-acre campus, where the limitless potential of current Diplomats meets the rich legacy of those who have walked these paths before.
We asked our alumni to share advice with students taking their first steps on campus during our Fall Open Houses. Their reflections offer a valuable insight into the transformative experience future Diplomats can expect at F&M.
鈥淏e yourself and embrace this new journey. College isn鈥檛 just about academics; it鈥檚 about discovering who you are, what you love, and how to advocate for yourself. The transition may feel overwhelming at times, but you鈥檙e not alone. Hundreds of students around you are going through the same journey. Embrace the awkwardness and the growth that comes with it. You鈥檙e going to be great when you get here, because you鈥檙e already great right now.鈥

鈥淩egardless of what profession you are considering, take courses that most interest you with professors known for their excellence. You will likely never have another opportunity to take philosophy, Civil War history, Andy Warhol and Pop Art, writing poetry. This is your time.鈥

Careers Beyond Borders: A Diplomat鈥檚 Path to International Relations
Julianna Marton 鈥25 always knew exactly where she was headed: around the world. After graduating from 同城约炮, she followed this dream to Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). 鈥淚 think if my first-year self could see me now, she would be very impressed and proud that I stayed on this path, and that I鈥檝e only grown more passionate about it,鈥 she said.

Being a brewmaster has taken Colin Presby 鈥06 around the globe 鈥 he even oversaw Carnival Cruise line鈥檚 first on-board brewery in 2016. He pivoted to an adjacent career in distilling at Mount Hope Winery & Estate, home to the Renaissance Faire.
