About History

Our Program and Courses

History is both a major and a minor at F&M. Our program is designed to provide opportunities to encounter peoples, cultures and political systems from across time and from around the globe. When you study history at F&M, you鈥檒l explore humanity through historical theory and research, inspecting the questions, challenges, successes and failures that have shaped our world. You鈥檒l learn the essential skills of historians, gaining the ability to research thoroughly, read critically, analyze sources accurately, and write and communicate your findings clearly.

By the time you graduate, you will be able to:
  • Recognize history as an intellectual process involving selection and evaluation of material and construction of arguments.
  • Understand history as a series of major turning points and the process of change over time.
  • Read and understand primary, secondary and tertiary sources and identify the place and purpose of each for historical study.
  • Develop critical awareness of your own approach to the past.

Learning Outside the Classroom

You鈥檒l discover in a short time that the study of history extends far outside the classroom. F&M鈥檚 history department has a long tradition of encouraging students鈥 intellectual growth through research opportunities, off-campus study, and more. Our goal is to provide close supervision and mentoring to students in the classroom and around the world.

Research & Independent Studies

Do you want to research Lancaster鈥檚 history in World War I? Or maybe you want to uncover the complicated history of the women鈥檚 suffrage movement? You can at F&M. As you dive into the intricacies of the past, you鈥檒l discover historical areas or ideas you want to further explore. The good news? You won鈥檛 have to wait until graduate school to launch your investigation.

At F&M, you鈥檒l find extraordinary opportunities to study abroad. Our history majors have studied in Australia, Austria, China, England, France, Germany, Ghana, Italy, Japan, South Africa, Spain, and Tanzania, to name a few places. You, too, can make study abroad integral to your experiences and research.

The History Club

The History Club, an F&M student organization, is an intellectual and social opportunity to enhance your academic experience. The History Club examines historical events with a critical eye and perspective and provides students the opportunity to discover more about history.

Museums & Libraries

F&M鈥檚 Phillips Museum of Art and the nearby North Museum, a natural historical collection at the southern end of campus, offer comprehensive materials on historical topics. Additional resources for history students include F&M鈥檚 two research libraries: Shadek-Fackenthal Library and Martin Library of the Sciences, which houses F&M鈥檚 archives and special collections.

Public Service Leadership Fellows

Leadership through service to others.

Public service, at its core, is the pursuit of the common good. Those dedicated to public service aim to strengthen communities through democratic engagement and collaboration with community members. The Public Service Leadership Fellows program is designed to help students like you develop the skills you need to innovate in the public sphere and effect positive change as future leaders.

As a Public Service Leadership Fellow, you will:
  • participate in four professional development workshops during the academic year. These workshops will focus on specific leadership competencies borrowed from the 鈥淧ublic Service Leadership Model鈥 of the Partnership for Public Service
  • attend periodic, seminar-style discussions with local public servants (these discussions will allow Fellows to learn from public servants about their career paths as well as the challenges and opportunities public servants face in doing their work)
  • shadow local public servants at least twice during the academic year
  • build bonds with other Fellows through social events like 鈥減ublic service movie nights鈥
  • prepare, in consultation with the program鈥檚 academic director, an end-of-year self-assessment that examines the Fellow鈥檚 leadership preparedness (including personal and academic growth over the course of the year) and develops their long-term public service goals

Exploring Lancaster's Revolutionary History the Diplomat Way

As a Diplomat, Richie Dockery 鈥26 has learned to never restrict the breadth of his experience.

Inspired by an F&M professor and the College鈥檚 鈥渁mpersand鈥 approach, the government major spent his summer focused on his passion for history, serving as a research assistant and archivist at Lancaster鈥檚 Historic Rock Ford. The estate鈥檚 grounds include the mansion of Gen. Edward Hand, who served as adjutant general of the Continental Army under George Washington.

鈥淎s the estate鈥檚 newest research assistant and archivist, I鈥檓 entrusted with sifting through its Revolutionary War documents, categorizing and organizing them, and overhauling the mansion-turned-museum鈥檚 entirely pre-digital archives,鈥 Dockery said. 鈥淎lthough I鈥檝e flexed my research muscle in the classroom, archival work is a new labyrinth of challenges. My diligence and conduct on the job are not only valuable for the quality of the research, but they are also marketable skills cherished everywhere, giving me an advantage in the post-graduation job market.鈥

鈥淓very day I think of how lucky I am to be part of a community that is both motivating and exciting.鈥

History and government major Ethan Grabowski 鈥26 said that, in a lot of ways, F&M was exactly what he was looking for in a college.

鈥淭he main thing that led me here was the amazing students and the community they create,鈥 he said.

Grabowski added that F&M students strike a unique balance.

鈥淭hey are brilliant, driven, hard-working people, but also prioritize being friendly, welcoming and fun to be around,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t is hard to find other students that are more well-rounded than they are, and every day I think of how lucky I am to be part of a community that is both motivating and exciting.鈥

A Semester in Paris: 鈥楴ight at the Museum鈥 Could Never Compare

Ruth Axford 鈥25 never imagined that she would walk to the Arc de Triomphe to take the metro, intern in the same building complex as the Louvre, or go to the Bastille area for class. But she did all of that and more when she spent a semester studying abroad in Paris. Axford interned at the Mus茅e des Arts D茅coratifs, a museum dedicated to the exhibition and preservation of the decorative arts. The French and history double major worked on an exhibit for Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen.

鈥淕oing through the finished product on opening night with my colleagues, seeing it all come to life without Tyvek commercial wrap on the floor was crazy,鈥 Axford said. 鈥淲hen we came out, the credits on the wall said all our names, including 鈥榓vec la collaboration de Ruth Axford.鈥 I may have happily cried walking home along the Champs Elys茅es, amazed at everything I accomplished in only four months.鈥
